Having a strong core can lead to many health benefits, including reduced lower back pain, improved general strength and reduced risk of falling in later life.
A strong core is essential for effective movement
Today's lifestyle often involves a large amount of time spent in a seated and supported position. This can lead to a weakening of the core muscles over time as they adapt to a sedentary lifestyle. Improving your core strength is an important goal to train for as it will allow for effective movement and will stabilise your body during physical activity.
Lower back pain can be relieved by a strong core
Although there are a number of factors that can contribute to lower back pain, one of the main contributors is a weak core. Through a sedentary lifestyle effective core muscle activation can be lost leading to poor lifting technique and bad posture. Improving your core stability is essential to teach the body how to support itself effectively and therefore reduce the risk of injury.
Training only the abdominals is not the answer
When people think of training for core stability they often think of sit ups and abdominal crunches. The core is in fact made up of 3 muscle layers, with each layer made up of a number of different muscle groups. For effective all-round core strength to be improved all muscle layers and all muscles within each layer need to be challenged. My knowledge of the core allows me to prescribe the correct exercises for your core stability goals that will strengthen all core muscles leading to improved balance, more confidence when physically active and a reduced risk of injury.
A strong core can reduce the risk of falling in later life
As you get older it is a natural process that your muscles begin to weaken and your bones become more and more brittle. This means that the potential for falling increases, which can lead to some serious injuries that take a long time to heal properly. However, it is never too late to start training and even in later life improving your core stability is possible. Improved core strength can seriously increase your mobility in later life and improve your confidence when undertaking every day activities.
